Research compounds: types and terminology
A structural overview of how research compounds are grouped, what the specification vocabulary means, and how the ATMI Labs catalog is organised around research context rather than marketing categories.
Compound types encountered in laboratory catalogs
Research catalogs mix several material classes. Distinguishing them matters because each is characterised, documented, and handled differently.
- Peptides — amino-acid chains, usually supplied lyophilized and characterised by sequence and molecular weight.
- Peptide co-formulations — two or more peptides combined in a single vial at labelled strengths.
- Small molecules and cofactors — non-peptide compounds characterised by molecular formula and mass.
- Diluents and reagents — laboratory supplies such as bacteriostatic water, used to reconstitute lyophilized material.
Why compounds are grouped by research context
ATMI Labs organises its catalog by the research context in which a compound is typically studied — growth hormone signaling, metabolic pathways, tissue and cellular research, cellular energetics, longevity and regeneration, neuroendocrine signaling, cognitive and neuro research, and research essentials.
These groupings are navigational. They describe the literature context a compound appears in; they are not statements that compounds within a group produce comparable effects, and they carry no therapeutic meaning.
Reading a specification consistently
A specification is only useful if the same fields are compared across products. Identity fields (sequence or formula, molecular weight, CAS where assigned) establish what the material is. Presentation fields (strength, fill, lyophilized or solution) establish what is in the vial. Documentation fields (lot identifier, analytical methods, report availability) establish what can be verified.
When any of the three groups is missing, the remaining fields cannot be independently confirmed — which is why lot-level documentation is treated as part of the specification rather than as an optional extra.
