What are research peptides?
A general introduction to peptides as laboratory research materials — terminology, how they are described analytically, and what documentation accompanies a released lot.
Peptides in general terms
A peptide is a chain of amino acids joined by peptide bonds. Chains are commonly described as peptides at shorter lengths and as proteins at longer lengths; there is no single universal cut-off, and the distinction is descriptive rather than regulatory.
Peptides used in laboratory work are typically produced by chemical synthesis or by recombinant expression, then purified and characterised before release. The identity of a synthetic peptide is defined by its amino-acid sequence, and its analytical profile is defined by the methods used to confirm that sequence and to quantify impurities.
What "research peptide" means
"Research peptide" is a supply designation, not a scientific class. It indicates that the material is offered for laboratory and analytical research only — it is not a drug, dietary supplement, cosmetic, or food, and it is not intended for human or veterinary use.
Because the designation describes intended use rather than chemistry, the useful questions about any research peptide are analytical: what is the sequence, what is the reported purity, which methods produced that figure, and can the figure be traced to the specific lot in hand.
Terminology you will see on a label or specification
Most catalog and specification entries reuse a small vocabulary. Understanding it makes specifications comparable across suppliers.
- Sequence — the amino-acid order, usually written in single-letter code.
- Molecular weight — the calculated mass of the peptide, used as the reference value in mass-spectrometry confirmation.
- CAS number — a registry identifier for the chemical substance, where one has been assigned.
- Strength — the labelled quantity of peptide in the vial, typically expressed in milligrams.
- Lyophilized — supplied as a freeze-dried solid rather than in solution.
- Lot / batch identifier — the code that ties a specific vial to its analytical documentation.
How research-grade material is documented
Documentation is what separates a described product from a verifiable one. ATMI Labs analyses each batch by reversed-phase HPLC and confirms molecular weight by LC-MS, an independent laboratory retests the batch, and the resulting analytical documentation is published against the lot number.
That means a laboratory can read the lot code from the vial, retrieve the corresponding Certificate of Analysis, and record the identity and purity figures that apply to the exact material being used — rather than to a generic product description.
